Younger Hungarians more open to gays
Tolerance and understanding of gays is more prevalent among young people in Hungary, while intolerance rises among older people, according to a survey by Marketing Centrum.
Some 43% of those aged 18-29 do not believe that homosexuals are in some way ill, while 23% believe they are, 15% say they are for the most part and 19% say they are ill to a small extent, according to a Marketing Centrum poll.
At the other end of the spectrum, 54% of those over 60 say gays are ill, 19% say they are not, 17% say they are ill to a great extent and 10% say they are ill to a small extent.
Similarly, 41% of those aged 18-29 believe that love between homosexuals can be pure, whereas only 24% of those over 60 agree.
Hungarian society has moved closer to Europe in this area than in other matters, Marketing Centrum observes, as despite the regularly flaring social and political conflicts, the attitude of Hungarians towards gays is changing, albeit slowly.
