The Hungarian section of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is protesting against the planned taxpayer-funded expansion of a brown-coal power station in northern Hungary.

WWF Hungary said in a statement on Thursday that the planned expansion will result in an annual 1 million-tonne increase in carbon-dioxide emissions.

The state should instead spend money on increasing energy efficiency and promoting energy saving and the use of renewable energy, WWF Hungary said. The expansion of the lignite-based power station using public funds is unacceptable, said the WWF. The state should instead focus its efforts on cutting greenhouse gas emissions, WWF added.

Matra Power Station officials recently confirmed that a project company would be set up with the Hungarian Electricity Works to build new electricity production capacities at a cost of 700 million euros.
