A young woman suffered serious injures to her spine and skull when an uprooted tree fell on her at Budapest's Margitsziget (Margaret Island) during a fierce wind storm that swept through Hungary Thursday evening.

The strongest winds, 125 km/h, were measured in Balatonaliga. In Budapest, gusts reached speeds of 110 km/h. The storm was not accompanied by considerable precipitation, but an exceptional amount of lightning could be seen.

Firefighters were called on 400 occasions during and after the storm that reached Hungary from the direction of Croatia and affected the northern part of Southern Transdanubia and Northern Transdanubia, in addition to the capital. Most of the damage occurred in Pest, Somogy, Fejér, Veszprém and Zala counties, where uprooted trees and broken overhead cables caused problems.

In the village of Nemesdéde, Somogy County, the wind swept away the roof of the church.
