Weekend bicycle lane established on Budapest bridge
The outer lane on the north side of Budapest's Margaret Bridge (Margit híd) will be turned into a cycle lane on weekends until the end of September, reports origo.hu.
The aim of closing the lane from motorized vehicles between 2 p.m. on Saturdays and midnight on Sundays is to provide cyclists a more convenient and safer way to access Margaret Island (Margitsziget). Until now, cyclists and pedestrians shared the narrow footpath on the north side of the bridge to access the popular recreation area. The establishment of the bicycle lane was initiated by the Bicycle Club of Hungary (Magyar Kerékpárosklub).
The lane was opened to bicycle traffic by Gábor Dancs, traffic commissioner of the Budapest Government, on Saturday. At the event, he announced that he would launch a movement to change Hungary's traffic laws (KRESZ) to ensure equal treatment for cyclists.
Margaret Bridge is scheduled to be renovated in 2009. According to plans, it will be wider and have bicycle lanes.
