Although the popular 20-year-old folk art festival will not officially go ahead this year due to a lack of government and other funding, Kapolcs and the surrounding villages have confirmed they will stage an "alternative" festival between July 22 to August 9, Népszabadság writes. The Völgykavalkád ("Valley Cavalcade") will be funded largely by sponsors, local governments and residents, and the fact that many of the performers will not be paid.

Although the schedule is yet to be finalized, the festival will be smaller and cost considerably less than the Ft 240 million spent in 2007. Monostorapáti, the town where most of the events are held, will host 40 performances and 10 exhibitions at 50 locations.

The festival is not intended to compete with the "Valley of Arts," which residents hope will return next year.
