US grateful to Hungary for help with Cuban refugees
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice thanked visiting Hungarian Foreign Minister Kinga Göncz in Washington on Friday for Hungary's readiness to receive 21 Cuban refugees who had earlier fled to Guantanamo bay.
The two ministers devoted most of their time to the Kosovo issue. Göncz commented that it is important to the US that a united European stance develops on the issue of Kosovo, adding that the three months left before the December deadline should be devoted to building confidence, "even if the opposing sides are unable to reach a compromise at present."
Rice expressed hope that Hungary could be included among countries enjoying visa exemption before late January 2009. Göncz will return to the US in ten days time to attend a UN General Assembly session.
