Update on Budapest demonstrations (Wed., 14:30 CET)
A total of 137 people had been taken into custody in the past two days including "football hooligans," said Árpád Szabadfi, general assistant of the national police chief, at a press conference on Wednesday. Police are looking for another 42 rioters; 140 police officers were injured in the fights.
Meanwhile, Justice Minister József Petrétei said police proved on Tuesday night that they are capable of protecting the safety of citizens. He added that using firearms would have been justified in the past days, but he asked the authorities not to use them.
Budapest Police Chief Péter Gergényi said officers work in 12-hour shifts. A 100-member investigation team was set up to analyze footage of the protests and find the perpetrators.
