German woman only foreigner injured in train crash
Contrary to earlier reports, a 19-year-old German woman was the only foreign victim of Monday morning's train crash near Budapest which left four people dead and 26 injured.
The woman is still in intensive care after undergoing an operation and facing reconstruction to her face later on Tuesday, a senior doctor at the National Medical Centre, Lajos Zsiros, told MTI.
Earlier MTI reported that a British woman had been among the victims. It has since emerged that this information was false.
Zsiros said a Hungarian involved in the crash had admitted to intensive care in his hospital, who has since been stabilised.
Four people died, three suffered life-threatening injures, four were critically hurt and 19 suffered minor injuries in the crash that occurred when a passenger train crashed into the rear carriage of an Intercity train en-route from Nyiregyhaza, E Hungary, to Budapest. A signal failure is believed to have been at fault.
Transport Minister Pal Szabo and MAV Hungarian railways board chairman Miklos Kamaras have resigned.
The government has offered emergency financial aid to the families of the fatal victims.
