Unseasonable temperatures may be coming to a close

This year's fall and early winter have seen record high temperatures throughout Europe, and Hungary is no exception. During the first two weeks of December, several weather milestones were broken in Hungary, and overall temperatures were as much as 12 degrees higher than the typical averages for the month. Migrating birds have stayed behind, and animals have opted against hibernation because of the unusually seasonable weather.

Meanwhile, the operators of Hungary's skiing facilities in Kékestető, Bánkút, Galyatető, and Mátraszentiván are still waiting for enough snow to start the skiing season. According to rtlklub.hu, millions of forints have recently been invested in the ski centers, and new courses, lifts and snow cannons have been installed in many of them over the past few years.

According to forecasts, however, winter may finally arrive in Hungary over the next few weeks, with snow expected by mid-January.

Already, temperatures in Budapest have dropped to the point where road maintenance authorities have started salting roads throughout Budapest, reports hirszerzo.hu. Forty-six specialized trucks are now continuously dusting the asphalt on bridges, overpasses and roads leading in and out of Budapest with salt. Traffic authorities are asking drivers to be cautious, due to the slippery roads and at times dense fog resulting from the cooling weather.
