There are 20,000 unregistered firearms in private hands in Hungary, Magyar Hírlap reports in an article on the massacre of 32 students at Virginia Tech University on Monday morning. Police experts speaking anonymously told the newspaper that many of the guns are small firearms, but they also include submachine guns originating from the Soviet army, as well as high-powered repeat weapons used in the Yugoslav wars.

Criminal psychologist Iván Münnich observed that aggression is becoming more accepted in Hungary, as anybody can obtain firearms.

Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány was among many state leaders to send a message of condolences to US President George Bush in the wake of the massacre.
