UNESCO warns about building power plant near Tokaj

A UNESCO report suggests suspending the construction of a straw burning power plant in Szerencs, because it is being built in the Tokaj-Hegyalja territory, endangers the area, and might provoke the withdrawal of Tokaj's world heritage title, writes origo.hu, based on a report in Magyar Nemzet.

Several civil organizations have protested against the contractor, which only gained the required permissions after the Szerencs local government adjusted its plans to fit the country planning policy. According to Magyar Nemzet, Ottó Hujber, an entrepreneur related to the Socialists, is behind the investment.

The report urging the suspension of the power plant's construction will be discussed in June by the World Heritage Committee, which may deprive Hungary of Tokaj's world heritage status.
