Two killed in grenade attack in Pécs
Two people, a man and a woman, were killed in Pecs, SW Hungary, late on Tuesday night when someone threw an explosive device, probably a hand grenade, through the window of their home, police reported.
Their two children, age three and five, were hospitalized in a state of shock, said police spokesman Peter Zsobrak. The couple had been watching television when the assault took place.
Zsobrak confirmed that the victims were Roma, but said that the initial police investigation suggested that the attack had not been racially motivated. The man, he said, "was well-known to police."
MTI's onsite correspondent reported that explosives experts were at the home before daybreak on Wednesday, looking for any additional explosive devices.
A neighbour and uncle of the dead man, Oliver Kovacs said he had learned of the assault from police. He told MTI that the victim had "handled car deals," but did not know whether he had any enemies. Other neighbours confirmed that they heard the explosion but were unable to provide any further information.
