Twenty-eight officers investigated in police brutality cases
The Budapest Investigating Prosecutor's Office has interrogated three more police officers in relation to alleged police brutality during the September-October riots, bringing the total number of suspects to 28, writes nol.hu.
Attila Morvai, spokesperson for the Budapest Prosecutor's Office said that the three officers interrogated recently are also suspected of "abuse committed while performing official duties." Only one of them made a confession and said he believed he had not committed a crime.
The Prosecutor's Office has received 171 reports related to the events of September and October. Most people reported abuse committed during performing official duties, criminal malfeasance and violating personal rights to freedom.
In relation to the events of October 23, a report has been filed by a protester that police violated the right to assembly, Morvai added. Investigation into this case is still under way, and suspects are yet to be named. In some other cases of reported police brutality, prosecutors are still waiting for victims to contact them. As an example, he mentioned that there is plenty of footage showing evidence of violence, but the victims have yet to be identified.
Meanwhile, the Central Investigating Prosecutor's Office is investigating a case of police violence based on a report by Fidesz MP Máriusz Révész. Spokesperson Edina Lőrincz said no suspects had been named.
