Tuesday launch for campaign targeting violence against women
Hungarian civil groups will launch a 16-day eye-opener campaign on violence against women and family violence on November 25, the organisers said on Sunday.
Statistics show that 67 women died in Hungary so far in 2008 as a result of crime within the family, Robert Almosd of Amnesty International Hungary said, adding that Hungarian laws are not adequate for protection against rape and violence against women.
He said it was unacceptable that sexual offences were not considered crime against a person, but only a moral offence, and that it was the victim who had to prove the act was without their consent.
He added that professionals in Hungary were not sufficiently trained for dealing with the victims.
The campaign aims to protest against the inadequate laws, as well as raise awareness and offer training in the area of dealing with victims, Almosd said.
