Trees illegally removed near Slovak-Hungarian border

Thousands of cubic meters of trees have been removed over the last few weeks in the outskirts of Süttő (Komárom-Esztergom County), apparently illegally, reports Magyar Nemzet. The area is under the protection of the Natura 2000 network.

The notary summoned Ferenc Trencsik, the owner of the land, into the mayor's office, where it was determined that he was not the one who cut the trees out, but a contractor who did it on his behalf. The owner told Magyar Nemzet that he only wanted to make the appearance of his parcel nicer.

According to the contract made between him and the contractor, the latter was responsible for obtaining the necessary permissions. He added that the contractor assured him that these permissions had been gathered from the Észak-Dunántúl Environmental Inspectorate (Észak-dunántúli Környezetvédelmi Felügyelőség). The inspectorate, however, denies that they issued any permission for logging on protected areas. In the meantime, the contractor, who had already begun chopping out trees in another parcel denied he was involved and hung up on the newspaper when they called him.

Süttő mayor János Czermann expressed his confusion over the arbitrary actions of the contractor who did not inform any of the competent authorities.

The mayor of the nearby Neszmély Ferenc Benkő said that, although the affected area does not belong to his town, he and the residents disapprove of the logging because the impression one receives when arriving to Neszmély is important to them.
