As the summer travel season approaches, Budapest is on a list of preferred "off the beaten path" European destinations for travelers from Canada, reports Canadian internet-based travel agency Expedia.ca.

According to the travel agency, 70% of Canadians are drawn to less popular European cities such as Budapest because they offer comparable historical and architectural attractions to other European cities, but are often less expensive and more interesting.

Backpackers with a maple leaf flag on their packs are not a new sight in recent years, but Expedia reports that the number of Canadian tourists to Budapest, Dubrovnik, Valencia and Tallinn has tripled in the last two years.

Attractions drawing Canadians to the "Paris of the East" are not only the world-famous thermal spas or goulash soup. The "stunning array of architecture" is one reason Expedia suggests to head to Budapest. Tourists are also advised to mosey through streets crosshatched with ornate edifices, or go underground to explore the city's network of over 200 caves.

Night life and Jewish history are also draws: Expedia highlights District VII as a popular hot spot. After visiting the largest synagogue in Europe, the Dohany Street Synagogue, Canadian visitors will likely enjoy "a series of hip cafés, bars, nightclubs and trendy stores."

When it comes time to sleep, for Canadian travelers are not being sent to hostels either, Expedia puts Budapest's five-star Corinthia Grand Hotel Royal at the top of its Insiders' Select list.
