Train derails at Budapest's Nyugati station
A train derailed at Budapest's Nyugati (Western) Railway Station Monday morning. Monday's schedule will "turn upside down," writes inforadio.hu.
The accident happened right under the Ferdinánd Bridge, which makes rescue operations more difficult. Passengers can expect delays all day. Only six tracks leading out of the station are free, all others are being blocked by the derailed train.
The accident affects the Budapest-Cegléd-Szolnok-Debrecen route and the Cegléd-Szeged route which is a branch of the former, writes index.hu. Trains from Debrecen and Szeged arrive at and depart from Kőbánya-Kispest. Trains on the Monor route do not run, and the missing service is compensated by Szolnok "zoning" trains stopping at every station. These trains arrive at and depart from Zugló.
Passengers wishing to travel to a town on the Szolnok route should go to the Zugló station - located near the intersection of Thököly út and Hungária körút, accessible by Bus 7 and Tram 1 - or take M3 to Kőbánya-Kispest. Passengers traveling to Debrecen, Szeged or farther should go to Kőbánya-Kispest as well. Nyíregyháza through Miskolc by InterCity can be accessed from Keleti (Eastern) Railway Station, located on the M2 line.
Services on the Vác-Esztergom route are uninterrupted.
Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
