Top-secret document stolen from bureau of investigation
A highly confidential document classified as a state secret was stolen from the National Bureau of Investigation (NNI) building between July 24 and 31, police announced on Tuesday. The National Police have ordered a fact-finding investigation and the NNI director an internal investigation.
The affair has no political dimension, according to Népszabadság. The document was apparently given to an unspecified journalist, but may also have been forwarded to others, too. A copy has also been relayed to a television station, Magyar Hírlap reports.
The police said it can be assumed, based on investigations so far, that the thief wanted to discredit the police and the NNI, rather than to learn about state secrets.
Anyone who makes the secret public could be sentenced up to eight years imprisonment.
