Three-day sweep through Budapest nets Ft 40 million in fines
In a coordinated effort consisting of police, the labor and tax authorities, the Customs Office, the consumer protection, the National Consumer Protection Authority, the National Public Health and Medical Officer Service, the civil guards and the environmental protection authority of the Middle Danube Valley, fines totaling Ft 40 million (€172,453) were issued.
The goal of the crackdown was to check drivers, construction works and foreigners, to explore non-ferrous metal theft and taxation irregularities and to take measures against panhandling and leaflet distributing.
Roughly 300 enforcement agency employees took part in the operation which took place in Budapest. Over the crackdown's three days, police checked the identity of 4,510 people and 62 of them were taken into custody, reports index.hu.
The agencies checked metal shops, heavily trafficked roads, commercial facilities, restaurants and taverns, heading from the outer districts to the city center. This was the second such crackdown in Budapest in a month, and others will follow as the results are encouraging.
