Thousands visit Budapest zoo on its 140th birthday
Tens of thousands of people thronged the Budapest Zoo yesterday as the entry fee was cut by 90% to mark the zoo's 140th birthday.
Environment Minister Miklós Persányi, a former director of the zoo, said in a brief address that Hungarians can be proud to see the renovated buildings at the zoo in their pristine splendour. Mayor Gábor Demszky said Budapest city council contributed roughly Ft 3.2 billion in subsidies to the zoo over the past 15 years.
