Thousands stage march against austerity measures

Some 10,000 people organised by the National Society of Large Families (NOE) and 30 other NGOs walked four kilometers from Fiumei út in the Eighth District to Parliament to protest against the austerity measures.

Some radical demonstrators carrying Árpád flags joined the demonstrators after a minor dispute, as organizers had told participants not to carry flags other than the national flag. Some demonstrators held up placards reading "Get lost, Gyurcsány," "Red Murderers" and "Red Fascists".

At Kossuth tér, Fidesz deputy chairwoman Ildikó Gáll Pelcz said the supposedly sensitive social-liberal government not only generates problems which it will not defuse, but creates chaos and fear. "Frightened people will get angry and will resort to violence sooner or later," she said.

Other speakers included NOE president Endre Szabó, Chamber of Doctors president Tamás Horváth, and Democratic Union of Teachers leader Gábor Kerpen.
