Thousands expected for cycle demonstration

Some 10,000-20,000 cyclists are expected to take part in today's Critical Mass campaign to promote cycling as a preferable form of transport to cars.

Cyclists will take to the roads in large numbers from 5.30 p.m., mingling with regular motorised traffic to take over the roads by sheer force of numbers. Most are expected to choose the Nagykörút.

The child-centred “Kidical Mass” cycle will begin at 6.30 p.m. and proceed under police escort along Károly körút, Andrássy út, Oktogon, Teréz körút, Király utca and Városháza park.

The cyclists aim to publicise their calls for a bicycle lane on the Nagykörút, passable bridges, more places to park bikes, and a safer traffic code.

Organiser Gábor Kürti told Inforádió that the number of cyclists has grown tenfold during the past few years, yet less than 0.5% of the funds earmarked to boost transport go towards cycling.
