Thirteen hospitalized with meningitis in Western Hungary
Thirteen young adults have been hospitalized in the Western Hungarian town of Zalaegerszeg with meningitis over the past several days, reports hirado.hu. While the condition of the 13 infected individuals is listed as "serious," doctors reported no notable complications as of yet. Officials at the hospital said they expect more infected patients to turn up in the coming days.
The outbreak is likely due in all of the cases to the consumption of goat milk that had not been pasteurized. Among the patients are a goat breeder and his family. The animal or animals that passed on the disease may have gotten it from a sheep tick.
The authorities have cautioned people who purchase fresh goat milk in the region to boil it before consuming it.
