Theories on how the tape with PM's speech was leaked
Several theories exist in the Socialist Party about whose interests were served by the recent tape recording disclosure. Most of them believe it is likely that some wanted to torpedo Gyurcsány's planned party chairmanship and believe that one of the old party leaders is in the background.
This is inconsistent, however, with the fact that the mystery hopeful for party chairman has put the Socialist Party in a difficult position. What is certain is that Gyurcsány's election to the post of chairman was not in doubt before the scandal, while now it is.
A second theory holds that the prime minister himself leaked the speech to put an end to Fidesz's "the government is lying" campaign. According to another version Fidesz managed to get the recording early in the summer, which is why it built its local election campaign on the "lying government" theme.
