Ten Hungarians were given posthumous Righteous among the Nations awards by the Jerusalem-based Yad Vashem institute in Budapest on Tuesday.

The event, held in Parliament, was attended by House Speaker Katalin Szili, Local Governments Minister Istvan Gyenesei, Israeli ambassador to Hungary Aliza Bin-Noun and retired chief rabbi Jozsef Schweitzer.

In her award-giving speech, Bin-Noun said the Hungarians were recognised for not turning their back on the persecuted during the most horrible period of history. "Hungary can indeed be proud of them and we in Israel give respect to them as Righteous among the Nations," she added.

The Righteous among the Nations award is given to non-Jews who saved Jewish lives during WWII.
