Teachers stage brief strike across Hungary
A brief strike was held by Hungary's schoolteachers this morning, with participation varying widely from county to county.
100% participation was recorded in only one Budapest school, although many institutions cancelled the first two periods to the delight of students.
In one town, the entire staff of the sole school took part in the demonstration, and padlocked the building, while in many Budapest schools only a few staff members refused to work between 8 and 10 a.m., Friday morning, reports origo.hu.
According to data received by the Democratic Union of Pedagogues (Pedagógusok Demokratikus Szakszervezete), the Friday morning teachers' strike affected 15,000 educators in 500 educational institutions in 300 towns across Hungary, said Gábor Kerpen, the president of the Union.
Kerpen mentioned the possibility of a larger scale and longer demonstration in the first half of next year if the Ministry of Education fails to fulfill its promises of educational reform.
