Szentendre BKV museum opens with new attractions

The Budapest Public Transport Museum located in the town of Szentendre, just north of Budapest, reopened for the season with new attractions on April 5, reports autohirek.hu. The 16-year-old museum presents the past 120 years of Budapest public transport, with 60 different vehicles including buses, trams, trains and trolleys.

One of the new attractions is the BKV-Ikarus 260 T trolley which operated between the 1970s and 1990s, renovated at a cost of Ft 16 million (€64,000). It was originally yellow before later being painted "trolley-red." A 120-year-old HÉV train and a 110-year-old tram are also on display.

Another new spectacle is a renewed diorama presenting the former Széll Kálmán tér, now transport hub Moszkva tér, as it was in 1944. Other rich photographic material of Budapest shows Communist dictator and politician János Kádár riding a tram and Prime Minister Jenő Fock at the celebration marking the opening of Metró 2.

The transport-inspired works of several lesser-known painters can also be viewed, along with propaganda films featuring renowned Hungarian actors of the era that were made to encourage proper behavior aboard public transport vehicles.
