Strasbourg asks Hungary on law banning the red star
"The Human Rights Court in Strasbourg has asked for the opinion of the Hungarian government on its law forbidding red stars," Workers party deputy chairman 2006 Attila Vajnai announced yesterday. The Hungarian government must send its answer by January.
Prosecutors sued Vajnai after he placed a paper red star on his coat while making a speech at the former location of the Marx and Engels statue on Jászai Mari square.
Three years ago, the Hungary branch of international anti-globalization group ATTACK called for the right to wear red stars in a petition signed by philosopher Gáspár Miklós Tamás, historian Tamás Krausz, film director Miklós Jancsó, Socialist MEP Zita Gurmai and then Youth and Sports Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány, among others.
