Spraying begins as mosquito situation at Lake Balaton turns "critical"
Spraying against mosquitoes in the Lake Balaton area will begin this weekend, after a group of experts determined the situation involving the insects had reached a "critical" point.
According to a report on gondola.hu, measurement of the problem is done at 15-17 places around the lake, and, when 28 "bites" per hour are observed, the door is opened for eradication methods.
János Lázár, secretary of the Balatoni Szövetség (Balaton Alliance) said that anti-mosquito insecticides will be sprayed four times onto an area of 5,700 hectares, and "biological" elimination methods employed in wetlands areas totaling 1,700 hectares.
The pesticide will not run off into the lake, Lázár said, adding that it is harmless to any animal larger than a mosquito.
The eradication program will cost Ft 70 million (€280,000), half of which will be covered by the state, and the other half by local governments.
