Socialists call for calm November 4
The Socialist Party is asking the nation's "silent majority" to place flowers at the new Budapest memorial in Felvonulási tér on November 4 in a tribute to the 1956 Uprising, deputy chairman Ferenc Juhász announced on Monday. Soviet forces invaded Budapest on November 4, 1956 to crush the insurgency.
Juhász asked those who yearn for a peaceful Hungary to make it clear that they outnumber those who disrupt law and order in the street. He said no speeches will be made at the memorial.
Fidesz officials met Monday night to discuss how to mark the "day of mourning." Christian Democrat leader Zsolt Semjén said his party will light a candle to remember victims on November 4.
