Anna Karakasev, a Socialist politician from Salgótarján, is being investigated for improper handling of finances and other crimes, reports index.hu. During the previous term, she was leader of the MSZP faction and chairwoman of the local government's financial committee.

Mayor Melinda Sztrémi Székyné said that Karakasev took a "considerable amount" from the funds of the Economic Services of Educational Institutions (Oktatási Intézmények Gazdasági Szolgálata; OIGSZ), which she chaired, on August 4, 2006. She returned the money only after an internal investigation was launched.

The town assembly - in which Fidesz is in the majority since last year's local elections - decided in February to turn to the prosecutor's office and ask for an official opinion on the matter. The prosecutor's office interpreted the request as a formal complaint, and launched an investigation against an unknown perpetrator, the mayor said.

Karakasev resigned from all her posts in February.
