Snowy owl chick hatched at Nyíregyháza Zoo
The Nyíregyháza Zoo (Sóstó Zoo) is showing its latest addition to the park, Batyu, a five-week-old snowy owl. His carer, who also chose the name, is carrying him around the zoo to show him to visitors up close.
Zoo Director László Gajdos that Batyu is the first snowy owl in a long time to be hatched at a Hungarian zoo. He added that the chick is very friendly to humans as he has been raised by zookeepers since his own parents abandoned him when he was just five days old. He now eats eight to ten young rats or mice each day and sometimes "snacks" on day-old chickens. He is expected to be independent within a few weeks.
The snowy owl is well known in Hungary from the Harry Potter series of books and movies.
