Small-scale demonstrations continue in Budapest
On Sunday November 4, Kossuth tér demonstrators set up three crosses on Szabadság tér as a protest against the Soviet monument. The legends Past, Present and Future were nailed to the crosses.
Around two hundred people held hands around the fenced and police-protected monument while speakers demanded the removal of the monument. They suggested that it should either be transferred to the Statue Park, or sent it back to Russia. Once the demonstration had ended, they proceeded to Kossuth tér to continue protesting.
Another protest was held at the official commemoration of the beating down of the 1956 revolution on Hősök tere. President László Sólyom, Speaker Katalin Szili, PM Ferenc Gyurcsány, Constitutional Court chairman Mihály Bihari, Supreme court chairman Zoltán Lomnici, '56 organizations and diplomacy boards attended to the memorial, during which around 150 protesters chanted insults at the Prime Minister, whistling, honking and blaring sirens. After the commemoration, the protesters left peacefully and no police intervention was required.
