The leading Slovakian diplomat to Budapest (budapesti szlovákiai ügyvivő) has been asked to appear at the foreign ministry today because of the increasing number of crimes committed against Hungarians in Slovakia, Foreign Minister Kinga Göncz said on television this morning.

State Secretary László Szőke will ask the diplomat to find ways of preventing more "atrocities" from happening, Göncz said. The attackers of the girl who was beaten in Nyitra (Nitra) on Friday have not been caught, and even though Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico commented on the incident, "his statements were unclear," FigyelőNet quotes Göncz as saying.

She stressed that "such incidents have not happened for many years in Slovakia." At the same time, anti-Slovakian incidents have to be prevented in Hungary, she added.

According to nappal.hu, Fico said, "It is unnecessary for Hungary to press Slovakia to fight against extremities." His statement was an answer to Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány who said on Saturday that it is not enough that Slovakian parties express their views on the incidents, the prime minister should clearly distance himself from them.
