Second Hungarian soldier dies in Afghanistan
Bomb disposal expert Capt. Krisztián Nemes died attempting to defuse an explosive device in Afghanistan on Saturday, one month after Lt. Gyula Kovács was killed in similar circumstances. Nemes, 32, had been sent to Baglan, the headquarters of the Hungarian Provincial Reconstruction Team, to replace Kovács, who died on June 10. Nemes died as he was defusing one of two bombs on a road leading to Kunduz, 50 kilometres from the Hungarian camp.
The bomb went off under unclear circumstances when Nemes began scouring the area with an Afghan policeman. The policeman was injured and taken to hospital. Several Hungarian soldiers nearby were unhurt.
Another bomb disposal expert will be sent to Afghanistan after appropriate training, Népszabadság reports, adding that only volunteers receive such assignments.
