The sailing season on Fertő tó, a lake on the Austro-Hungarian border, will start on Saturday, writes hirtv.hu, based on a report in local daily Kisalföld.

For one month, only occasional services (különjárat) will run, and scheduled services will commence on April 15. During Austrian festivals, there will be special services to transport tourists between the two countries.

This year will be the first season when ship passengers can cross the border between Austria and Hungary without passport checks, as Hungary joined the Schengen zone in December. However, tourists can expect random checks.

Another change will be that since ships no longer have to observe the opening hours of border crossing stations; they can sail out at any time of the day, including early mornings and late evenings.

The port has been reconstructed and its security devices modernized for the new season, the daily wrote.
