Romanian police catch attackers of Hungarian cyclists
Romanian Police have apprehended the three attackers of two Hungarian cyclists who were beaten near the Nyírábrány border crossing station on Saturday. While the attack had caused concern for the safety of Hungarians in Romania, and came at a time of increasing tension between Hungary and Slovakia over the rights of ethnic Hungarians in that country, the attackers in this case turned out to be ethnic Hungarians.
Bihar County Police Chief Liviu Popa said what is important in that the attackers were Romanian citizens, rather than Romanians of Hungarian ethnicity. Ha added that the most "inconvenient" thing about the case was that Romanian interior minister Vasile Blaga, who is currently traveling in Germany, had been asked to comment on a "massacre" of Hungarians over the weekend.
