Roma attack police officers during spot check
Police fired three warning shots to stop Roma who assaulted them during a spot check near Szátok, Nógrád county, on Wednesday.
The incident began when two policemen asked several people riding in a car for their identity cards. After the driver admitted he had been drinking alcohol, passengers threatened the police. When one of them put a stranglehold on one of the policemen, the other policeman called the district police station for reinforcements. As other Roma gathered, the policemen fired warning shots.
The local Roma authority leader managed to calm the situation.
Nógrád police chief Jenő Szabó described the use of guns as lawful and necessary. He then initiated talks with the local mayor and the Roma authority leader.
