Roma art, culture on program at Pécs2010 European Capital of Culture
The city of Pecs in southwestern Hungary will present the works of hundreds of Roma artists as part of the programmes of European Capital of Culture 2010, head of the local Roma council told the press on Wednesday.
Istvan Kosztics said the Pecs 2010 budget has allocated 20 million forints (74,000 euros) for Roma art and cultural programmes. The 30 events to be organised include a meeting of poets and writers, gypsy music and jazz concerts as well as theatre productions and photo exhibitions.
The Roma community will organise the traditional spring Ederlez festival at the end of April and a conference on gypsy traditions will be held in August, Kosztics said.
Hungary has a large community of Roma artists, and the programmes are hoped to attract Roma and non-Roma visitors alike, to help contribute to social integration, Kosztics added.
