Road salt supplies running low in Hungary

As a result of recent snow and freezing rain, Hungary is in short supply of road salt, writes inforadio.hu. Tons of salt and other materials are being poured onto the roads in order to counter slippery conditions and keep roads passable, but by now all the road salt set aside for this purpose has been used up, along with the salt mixed with sand, and even zeolite, which is considerably more expensive, is running short. New supplies will not be delivered until Wednesday or Thursday, when around 24 tons of salt are expected to arrive.

A trader told InfoRádió that as much road salt has been sold in the past week as in whole December. According to the trader, the reason for the scarce supplies is that, due to the mild winter last year, most apartment blocks did not keep stocks of salt in preparation for winter. Local governments are unlikely to be able to assist as they are usually not provided with a proper warehouse to store road salt, and cannot manage the needs of all the apartment houses that belong to them.
