In the first half of 2009, the number of road accidents fell by 9 percent compared to the same period last year, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said on Monday.

The number of road deaths fell by 4 percent and the seriously injured by 13 percent, the KSH said.

The number of road accidents rose between 2000 and 2007, and has been declining since 2007.

In the first six months, there were over 8,100 injuries as a result of road accidents, 67 percent of which were in built-up areas. The latter percentage represents a 12 percent reduction year on year.
