Renovation of historic Hungarian basilica planned
Renovation plans for the 800-year-old basilica of the Archabbey of Pannonhalma will be completed by September, writes radio.hu.
The building was last renovated by Ferenc Stornó 130 years ago. The whole interior of the church was renewed, when the main altar, the pulpit, the St. Martin glass window above the altar and the benches that can be seen today were installed. Since then, only minor repairs have been performed in the basilica.
Asztrik Várszegi, archabbot of Pannonhalma, told the portal that they would apply for funds for the renovation, but the plans have to be completed first.
"I signed a planning contract with a British architect one month ago," Várszegi said. "He and his team have started mapping the basilica and negotiations are underway between the community, the engineers and the designer. We calculate that we will have a authorized construction plan by the end of September, with which we can apply for funding."
