Remains of original Budapest settlers found in Castle District
Spires on the Matthias Church in the Castle District, located next to the find.
The remains of Buda's settlers have been unearthed during excavation of a medieval cemetery next to the Matthias Church in Budapest's Castle District, writes hirszerzo.hu, based on a report in daily Magyar Nemzet.
The nearly 600 skeletons excavated so far are of special importance, as remains of the first settlers of Buda had not been found before, the Budapest History Museum said.
Archaeologists will need more time to fully excavate the area than they originally thought, something the ministry of culture and the National Office of Cultural Heritage would need to give their permission for. Work could last until the end of November at most, as after that date, the quality of the soil will not make it possible to safely remove artifacts.
