Regulations eased on new construction at Lake Balaton
Hungary's government has again eased regulations on new construction at the country's largest lake, Lake Balaton, reports hirtv.hu.
The law now allows new buildings on the lake's shore to be up to eight meters high and three to four stories, as opposed to the former maximum height of 4.5 meters and one to two stories. This change is expected to raise considerably the value of property in the area.
The government finalized the decision two weeks ago, but did not publicly announce the change. The press was informed by the government publication Magyar Közlöny (Hungarian Gazette).
The introduction of the new regulation was not preceded by an analysis of its potential impact, and there is concern that taller buildings will mean more people, more waste and more burden on the lake's environment.
In an earlier change to building regulations at Lake Balaton, the government expanded the area on the lake's shore where new construction is permitted.
