Record quantity of contraband cigarettes seized
Customs officers seized a record 41,500 cartons of contraband cigarettes from a refrigerated truck with German tags in Szeged (SE Hungary), a regional Customs and Excise Office spokeswoman told MTI on Tuesday.
The untaxed cigarettes, worth 220 million forints (EUR 817,00), were found during a search of the truck's cargo bay early on Tuesday, Eva Nemedi Varga said. She said the cigarettes were secreted in cardboard boxes packed behind similar boxes that contained, according to the bill of lading, pita bread, being taken from Greece to Germany.
Legal proceedings have been initiated against the Greek driver.
