Reconstruction of Budapest bridge suspended
Due to the extreme cold, the ongoing reconstruction of Budapest's Margaret Bridge was suspended on Thursday morning for an indefinite period, the project leader told MTI.
As long as temperature fail to lastingly exceed minus 5 degrees Celsius, reconstruction works cannot be resumed, Ildiko Gonda said.
Chilly weather hampers both welding and oxygen cutting operations while drifting ice prevents the lifeboat from floating on the Danube, which is a compulsory labour safety requirement, she said.
Margaret Bridge, a main traffic artery of the city, is scheduled to reopen for traffic in August or December 2010, pending the outcome of disputes between the contractor and the Metropolitan Council.
