A strike this morning by employees of Hungarian state railway MÁV employees paralyzed 600 trains, and normal schedules will only be fully restored by this evening, writes fn.hu.

The temporary work stoppage, which took place between 6:00 and 8:00 a.m. today, was called by rail unions to protest against the planned closure of rail lines.

For safety reasons, stopped trains were not left standing on the tracks, but halted at the first stations they reached when the strike started.

Since the strike caused interruptions in ticket purchase, passengers were allowed to buy tickets on trains without paying extra charges.

As not all railway employees were on a strike, traffic did not stop at every station, and personnel involved in safety and some other work areas remained in operation.

In order to restore traffic as quickly as possible, suburban trains departing around 8:00 a.m. were put back into service first, while some trains have been "consolidated": and some others cancelled. InterCity and international trains are being treated as a priority.
