"Puszta Szafari" opens in Hortobágy National Park
A large population of wild horses live in Hungary's first national park.
A new game reserve (vadaspark) was recently opened on the territory of the Hortobágy National Park.
The new attraction, called "Puszta Szafari," will present the fauna of the Hortobágy as it was a few hundred years ago, said Gábor Szilágyi, the director of the park. Three large ungulate species live in the game reserve: the Przewalski's Horse (Equus ferus przewalskii) - an endangered species of wild horse - the African Wild Ass (Equus africanus) and the so-called "reconstructed" Aurochs, the Heck cattle. Previous bird life is represented by the pelican, while two predators, the wolf and the jackal, are also present.
A road, a central building for the game reserve, spacious cages for the animals and a small railway for transporting visitors have been completed, the director added. The railway will leave every hour between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays and between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekends and holidays.
The development cost nearly Ft 500 million (€1.82 million), most of which was covered by European Union funds. [mr1-kossuth.hu, hnp.hu]
