Public transport to be stepped up during Budapest bridge renovations
A proposal has been made to operate more frequent public transport service during the renovations of Budapest's Margaret Bridge, Index.hu reports.
The Budapest mayor's cabinet decided that Metro 2 and Tram 4-6 would operate more frequently, making it possible to transport 45,400 more passengers. In order to ensure maximum frequency, older type Ganz trams would also be in use on the Nagykörút - in addition to newer trams - on weekdays. Services which transport passengers to the bridge, such as the Szentendre HÉV and Trams 1 and 17, would also operate with more carriages or be more frequent.
The more frequent services would raise costs by a total of Ft 531 million (roughly €2 million).
The bridge was closed for renovations until 2011 on Friday. During this time, only public transport and emergency vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians are allowed to cross the bridge.
