President László Sólyom on Thursday stressed that efforts must be made to ensure the moral and legal rehabilitation of ethnic Hungarian politician János Esterházy in Slovakia. Speaking at a conference marking the anniversary of his death, Sólyom said Esterházy would not budge one iota from his principles and integrity.

Esterházy was sentenced to life imprisonment after World War II on war crime charges. He was charged with collaboration in smashing the Czechoslovak Republic and serving fascism, in part because in 1939, Esterházy advocated Slovak autonomy, in which the Hungarian community would have self-rule. Later, Esterházy was the only member of the Slovak Parliament to vote against the deportation of Jews.

Esterházy was sentenced to death in absentia in 1947 while he was a prisoner in Siberia.
